Enter your target total dose and dose rate to see how long a low-dose-rate exposure will take, how long the whole test will run with anneal time, and when it would finish.

How the calculation works

Irradiation time is total dose divided by dose rate. With dose in rad(Si) and rate in rad(Si)/s, the result is in seconds. For example, 50 krad(Si) is 50,000 rad(Si); at 10 mrad(Si)/s (0.010 rad(Si)/s) that is 5,000,000 seconds, or 57.9 days.

Rule of thumbAt 10 mrad(Si)/s, each 10 krad(Si) takes about 11.6 days.

Unit conversions

  • 1 krad(Si) = 1,000 rad(Si)
  • 10 mrad(Si)/s = 0.010 rad(Si)/s = 36 rad(Si)/h
  • 100 rad(Si)/s = 360,000 rad(Si)/h

For planning only. The dose and rate a program needs depend on its requirements and the current revision of MIL-STD-883 Test Method 1019 or other applicable standard. Parapet Radiation Lab is a planned facility; testing is not yet offered.
